Dilbilim Yaz Okulu

1. Comparative Indo-European Linguistics
1.1. Introductory textbooks & grammars
Fortson, Benjamin W. (2012): Indo-European Language and Culture. An Introduction. Malden – Oxford – Chichester, Blackwell [the most useful introduction to Indo-European Linguistics for beginners]

Beekes, Robert S. P. (2012): Comparative Indo-European Linguistics. An Introduction. Revised and corrected by Michiel de Vaan. Amsterdam – Philadelphia, John Benjamins [a useful introduction, but follows the so-called Leiden School]

Tichy, Eva (20042): Indogermanistisches Grundwissen für Studierende sprachwissenschaftlicher Disziplinen. Bremen, Hempen [a very short introduction]

Meier-Brügger, Michael (2019): Indogermanische Sprachwissenschaft. Berlin – New York, Walter de Gruyter [a useful introduction for advanced students – avoid its English translation based on the 8th edition, which is neither up-to-date nor a professional translation]
Kapović, Mate (ed.) (2017): The Indo-European Languages. Second Edition. London – New
York, Routledge [a survey of the Indo-European languages with rudimentary comparative grammar] Many other introductions exist, but they are outdated / idiosyncratic / intended to advanced students (for their details see the upcoming bibliography).
1.2. Etymological dictionaries
There is no comprehensive Proto-Indo-European etymological dictionary, only parts of the vocabulary have an up-to-date treatment:

LIV2 = Rix, Helmut (ed.) (2001): Lexikon der indogermanischen Verben. Die Wurzeln und ihre Primärstammbildungen. 2., erweiterte und verbesserte Auflage bearbeitet von Martin J. Kümmel und Helmut Rix. Wiesbaden, Reichert [the standard etymological dictionary of the Indo-European verb, continuously updated at http://www.martinkuemmel.de/liv2add.html ]

NIL = Wodtko, Dagmar S. – Britta Irslinger – Schneider, Carolin (2008): Nomina im
Indogermanischen Lexikon. Heidelberg, Winter [written according to the highest standards, but it presents only a selection of the nominal roots]

LIPP = Dunkel, George E. (2014): Lexikon der indogermanischen Partikel- und
Pronominalstämme I-II. Heidelberg, Winter [meant to be a standard, but in fact untrustworthy & idiosyncratic]

1.3. The Proto-Indo-European World and Prehistory
Mallory, James P. – Adams, Douglas Q. (2006): The Oxford Introduction to Proto-Indo-
European and the Proto-Indo-European World. Oxford, Oxford University Press [the most widespread handbook based on their previous work [(1997): Encyclopedia of Indo-European Culture. London – Chicago, Fitzroy Dearborn]; its phonology is, however, not standard and the book contains myriad philological problems]

Anthony, David W. – Ringe, Don (2015): The Indo-European Homeland from Linguistic and Archaeological Perspectives. Annual Review of Linguistics 2015: 199-219 [the most recent version of the most widely accepted hypothesis of the Indo-European homeland [superseding Anthony, David W. (2007): The Horse, the Wheel, and Language. How Bronze-Age Riders from the Eurasian Steppes Shaped the Modern World. Princeton – Oxford, Princeton University Press] – but archaeologically and linguistically highly problematic]

Pereltsvaig, Asya – Lewis, Martin W. (2015): The Indo-European Controvery. Facts and Fallacies in Historical Linguistics. Cambridge, Cambridge University Press [a vademecum against the computational approaches appearing even in newspaper headlines]
Avoid Gamkrelidze, Thomas V. – Ivanov, Vyacheslav V. (1995): Indo-European and the Indo-Europeans. A Reconstruction and Historical Analysis of a Proto-Language and a Proto-Culture I-II. Berlin – New York, Mouton de Gruyter, since it has nothing to do with standard Indo-European linguistics.
